From a conflicted city at the edge of financial crisis, images of raw energy taken at derelict warehouses of West Side Manhattan piers, document the 1973 underground gay culture that flourished along the Hudson River. With his sense of drama, Baltrop instilled the scenes, populated by dealers, hustlers, sunbathers, cruisers, and sex participants, with humanity.

Inspired by commercial celebrity photos, (Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, Marlon Brando), and death/ disaster newsphotos, Warhol used photos as source material to creatie his silk-screens. Later, with a singular visual vocabulary, he articulated his sensibilities, and conveyed his detached, observing eye by use of the dispassionate machine: the camera.
Ongoing through February 23, 2020. Rarely seen, moody paintings of 1980s Times Square peep shows. Documenting daily 1978-2008 lived experiences and observations as a young woman. Photos, drawings and paintings utilize unconventional industrial + domestic materials as surfaces; carpet, sandpaper, and black plastic bags capture a notoriously lawless, squalid, vibrantly alive time + place.

Beyond Giard’s best-known project, Particular Voices: Portraits of Gay and Lesbian Writers, highlighting Giard’s expansiveness: nudes to still lives, landscapes, activist/ artist portraits. Also artwork + archival materials of people photographed; context for the images/ lives documented.
Ongoing through May 2020. For more than 40 years, JEB has brought visibility to the movement with her fierce yet tender images of activists. In this installation she chronicles critical years of our history as a colorful and diverse LGBTQ people.

April 24, 2020, 7pm-12am. Unique, immersive poetry event takes poetry from classrooms and lecture halls to lush interiors of a bordello. Madame presents a cast of poets, each a carefully crafted character, who imparts their work in public readings/ spontaneous poetic eruptions. For a small fee all poets are available for sequestered readings on beds and chaise lounges in private rooms.
