Montreal has a somewhat unjustied reputation for decadence among gays in northeastern US states, but this isn't a hedonistic capital like Rio or New Orleans. Rather, gay social life here is very urban, in a pre-gentrified way. Montreal is what New York might have become if that city had found a way to lower crime without pricing the Village People out -- that is, if the Village People had all got iPhones and developed a fondness for hockey and karaoke.

The largest city in Quebec still has a large "gay ghetto," full of specialized bars in and around Le Village that continue to stay in business even without overflow crowds and over-expensive drinks. Eight bathhouses across the city offer various theme nights for diverse clienteles, and each of the four male strip clubs has its own distinct ambience. There are also drag/cabaret bars, leather and bear bars, neighborhood pubs, a variety of dance clubs, and lots of shops, restaurants and sidewalk cafes.

During summer months 14 car-free blocks of Ste-Catherine East (St-Hubert to Papineau) in the gay village fill with cafe tables and strollers, with public art events such as the May to September Aires Libres. Montreal now has 40-50 seasonal, temporary, and permanent pedestrian streets - see a map of the main ones.

Downtown, there are grand department stores and plenty of bookstores, both things that are disappearing from many US cities. Many theaters are clustered in the Quartier des Spectacles district around Place des Arts just south of the gay village. Also, although everyone seems connected to the web here, the gay scene is not yet dominated by phone apps: it's still considered good form to chat guys up in a bar or on the street. Enjoy that while it lasts!

 

Getting here
Montreal-Trudeau Airport, about 20 km (or 12 miles) southwest of the city, is serviced by a free shuttle bus between the airport and the VIA Dorval train station.

The airports is not directly served by the Metro system, but the Bus 747 Express will take you to Berri-UQAM Metro station (Berri at Sainte-Catherine E), 24 hours a day/ every day for CAD$3.25, exact change, valid for 120 minutes with free transfers between metro and bus lines. Buy tickets with cash or cards from machines at Arrivals or the Metro station, or with exact change in coins on the bus. Or buy a $10 ticket that includes unlimited transit on STM bus and métro networks for 24 consecutive hours.

A taxi to downtown costs a fixed fare of $40. For the same flat-rate fare Téo Taxi offers clean, all-electric vehicles, and free Wi-Fi. Uber services to downtown, on-demand at all times, start at $30-33. Above prices as of February 2018.

Rail service from New York City, Penn Station, is a scenic 9-hour trip along the Hudson River past Lake Champlain. See the Amtrak website for schedules and rates.

From Toronto there are six daily trains, downtown to downtown, taking 4-5 hours, and four trains daily on the 2 hour run between Montreal and Ottawa. From Quebec City, a 3-hour trip, there are three daily options - also one train most days from the Atlantic provinces. See Via Rail for info on these and other routes throughout Canada.

Getting around
Central Montreal is quite walkable; a stroll from Campus in Le Village to La Baie department store downtown takes about 20 minutes. For addresses, remember to distinguish between "Est" (east of boulevard Saint-Laurent) and "Ouest" (west) on major thoroughfares.

STM is the city's public transportation system of bus and metro routes. The Metro is clean and reliable, with 68 stations on four lines, with last departures at about 12:30am most nights, and about 1am Saturday nights. After that use a taxi or one of 23 routes of night buses. Of interest to those in Le Village, the number 358 runs every 30 minutes east and west along Ste-Catherine, from 1am to 5am between Frontenac and Atwater metro stations. Between Le Village and Plateau/ Mile-Ex the number 363 runs every 45 minutes during hours between 1am and 5am north on Saint-Laurant between Saint-Urbain Place-D'Armes (Saint-Antoine) and the De Castelnau metro station, and south on Saint-Urbain between these two points; continuing between De Castelnau and Henri-Bourassa along Saint-Laurent in both directions. Single fares for buses or trains are CAD$3.25, a two-trip fare is $6, and a ten-trip ticket is $27.50. Validated fare cards are good for 120 minutes and transfers between metro and bus lines can be made at no additional cost. One day unlimited travel cards cost $10, three days are $18, and for a week (Monday until 11:59pm Sunday) pay just $25.75. Buy tickets and cards at fare vending machines or a ticket booth.

One of the best ways to see montreal is by bike. Montreal has many bike paths throughout the city and along the river and canals. The BIXI, Montreal's public bike-sharing system, has over 450 stations (22 around the Gay Village) open from April through November with 24-hour access to thousands of bikes. A membership payment allows for quick and easy 24-hour access to the system, charged to your credit card. The first 30 minutes of each trip is without charge, but additional fees accrue for longer trips.
 

Neighborhoods
The Gay Village, or simply Le Village, is the obvious destination for gay travelers, but if in Montreal for more than a day, you should take advantage of the citywide gay-friendliness. Find the main strip in the Village along Ste-Catherine E, between Metro stations Berri-UQAm and Papineau.
Old Montreal. The riverfront district is undeniably touristy; still, it's a must-see for art gallery and architecture fans.
The Plateau, with Boulevard St-Laurent at its heart, has the most vibrant night/weekend scene in the city. There aren't so many specifically gay places, but there's plenty of eye candy on the streets. Mile End is the adjacent neighborhood, known for artists and bands -- touted of late as a hotbed of creativity, but still retaining a refreshingly off-the-beaten-track feel.

 

Excursions

Septentrion B & B in the Laurentians, is Quebec's only five-star gay inn. Les Chutes (waterfalls) de Ste- Marguerite du Lac Masson, are in Ste Adele nearby.

Tremblant is a ski resort in a park, 90 minutes north of the city. In the summertime the great expanses of waterways here are great for an odyssey in one of the canoes that can be rented here.

For a night in Quebec City two hours from Montreal, Le Coureur des Bois (15rue Ste. Ursule) is a Franco-Canadian gem of a guesthouse at the heart of Vieux-Québec.

 

Museums

Montreal Museum of Fine Arts / Musee des beaux-arts de Montreal (1379-1380 Sherbrooke W) is the grand dame of Canadian museums.

Museum of Contemporary Art / Musee d'Art Contemporain de Montreal (185 Ste-Catherine W) opposite Complexe Desjardins, has many exhibits of interest.

Notre-Dame Basilica (116 Notre-Dame) is a 350 year-old neo-gothic basilica where Celine Dion got married.

Pointe-a- Calliere (350 Place Royale) showcases archaeology and history in Old Montreal.

Biodome de Montreal (4777 Pierre-de- Coubertin) illustrates the continent's four ecosystems beneath the dome.
 

Media & Resources
The free monthly magazine Fugues is the best source for gay events and attractions in the city. The print edition, distributed at local businesses, almost entirely in French, but with parts in English, including bar listings, and an online edition in both languages. The city's best listings of events can be found here, and each May their Rainbow Guide (Guide Arc en Ciel) gay-interest bilingual tour guide for Montreal and beyond is published - in print and online.

AGQ, Archives gaies du Québec (1000, rue Amherst) "aims to receive, store and preserve every manuscript, printed, visual, sound document and any item testifying of the history of Quebec/Canada LGBTQ communities."

Fierté Montréal | Pride, sponsors of the Pride Parade, Community Day, conferences and other August events, have offices in Hochelaga.

GayRadioBec.com is Quebec's French-language gay internet radio service.

The Hour, a free weekly in English, has general arts info as well as alternative-press news. Wth the insider scoop on arts, fashion, design and gastonomy, Tourisme Montréal is a good online source of visitor information.

Maisonneuve Magazine publishes eclectic stories of national and international scope on the arts, culture and politics, including occasional articles about the local gay scene.

Never Apart Magazine "seeks to educate on equality, the environment and conscious living, while celebrating both established and emerging artists." Their gallery/centre exhibits works related to diverse Two-Spirit-lived experiences of gender fluidity/ sexualities, and hosts workshops, panels and speakers' events.

The Montreal Gazette is the mainstream daily newspaper, with online news, reviews, the arts, sports, events listings and more - in English. MTL Blog is another local resource.

The City of Montreal website has info on their many resources and attractions - including festivals, museums, the Planétarium, Botanical Garden, parks and libraries - plus sports and recreation facilities such as the 48 indoor, and 74 outdoor pools managed by the city.

Quebec men are not shy about their bodies, and Montreal has a long tradition of handsome guys entertaining others by stripping down to skin. The larger clubs feature between 15 to 40 dancers each night. Dancers begin sets slowly, casually dressed in street clothes, sometimes in fantasy costumes, to end up at finale, strutting aroused, in full priapic glory.
