Luxembourg City: Fortress with Bastion Beck, by Cayambe

Luxembourg

The country of Luxembourg, or in Luxembourgish, Groussherzogtum Lëtzebuerg, is the world’s only remaining sovereign grand duchy. Bordered by Belgium, France, and Germany, the country has a population of over half a million people packed into an area of less than 1,000 square miles. The capital and largest city is called, confusingly enough, Luxembourg. Most travelers call it Luxembourg City as a way to distinguish the two entities. The country has three official languages: Luxembourgish, German and French. English is also widely spoken.

There’s a small but enthusiastic gay community in Luxembourg City. The annual Gay Mat party, a small street party, is held each July in Luxemburg City. See other LGBT events at website Rosa Letzebuerg.

To connect with the locals start at: Banana's Bar & Kitchen (9, avenue Monterey) atttracting social groups of all ages, with food all day, music, and a friendly vibe; Le Petit Manoir Café Club (24, rue de l'Eau), cocktail bar with karaoke and drag shows; and ZanZen Bar & Lounge (27-29 rue Notre Dame), serving lunch and dinner, with art shows and a multicultural mix. Monkeys Bar (5-8, rue de la Loge) is a gay-friendly dance club, with karaoke, live music, and shows.

Getting here

Luxembourg-Findel International Airport is located 3 miles outside the capital. There are also trains from all the major capitals in Europe. See CFL for train information in French and German. For English-language info on trains from London see the Seat61 website.

Getting around

Within the capital, the bus system is handy. If you are traveling farther afield, there are trains to nearly every part of the country. For an overview in English see the Visit Luxembourg site.  Across the city a network of 400 Velóh automated rental bicycle stands allow for as many journeys as you like, within a subscription period of 7 days or more.

Currency and Money

Luxembourg is in the Euro Zone, so it accepts only euros.

Media & Resources

Rosa Letzebuerg is the local organization for gay men. It has info about the local community.

The Luxembourg City Tourist Office in Place Guillaume II has tips on events, festivals, places to stay, restaurants and nightlife options. The National Tourism Office also has a website for visitors.

For some gay and gay-friendly businesses see our map & listings section, with locations and weblinks. Off our map, in the town of Remich, on the German border to the west of Luxembourg City, Sauna N1 is the nearest gay sauna.
