October 20-28, 2017 annual Chinese festival, street parades, vegetarian/ vegan diet observed, sexual abstinence, no alcohol, rites at local shrines/ temples, entranced devotees pierce themselves, walk barefoot over hot coals, climb ladders with bladed rungs. Onlookers throw firecrackers. The final parade ends in Sapan Hin, where Chinese paper is burned, and spirits leave the possessed.
November 3-5, 2017. Each year on the full moon of the 12th month (traditional Thai lunar calendar), people float small candle-lit rafts (Krathong) on rivers, canals, lakes or sea, honoring the Goddess of Water. Fireworks, beauty contests, bar parties. Past year was cancelled following the death of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej.
