Gay Luxembourg
-------------------------------------
The country of Luxembourg, or in Luxembourgish, Groussherzogtum Lëtzebuerg, is the world’s only remaining sovereign grand duchy. Bordered by Belgium, France, and Germany, the country has a population of over half a million people packed into an area of less than 1,000 square miles. The capital and largest city is called, confusingly enough, Luxembourg. Most travelers call it Luxembourg City as a way to distinguish the two entities. The country has three official languages: Luxembourgish, German and French. English is also widely spoken. There’s a small but enthusiastic gay community in Luxembourg City. The annual Gay Mat party, a small street party, is held each July in Luxemburg City. At the head of Luxembourg's government since December 2013, Xavier Bettel is one of five openly gay Prime Ministers of European countries since 2009. He and his partner Gauthier Destenay were married in January 2015 after same-sex marriage law reforms came into effect. Bettel previously served as the Mayor of Luxembourg City. See local resources, news and events at the website of Rosa Letzebuerg, the LGBT community center.
Getting here
Luxembourg-Findel International Airport is located 3 miles outside the capital. There are also trains from all the major capitals in Europe. See CFL for train information in English, French and German. For English-language info on trains from London see the Seat61 website.
Getting around
Within the capital, the bus system is handy. If you are traveling farther afield, there are trains to nearly every part of the country. For an overview in English see the Public Transport website. In March 2020 this country became the first to make its public transport free - all public transport - trains, trams and buses.
Across the city a network of Velóh automated rental bicycles, at 75 stations, allow for as many journeys as you like, within a subscription period of 7 days or more.
Currency and Money
Luxembourg is in the Euro Zone, so businesses here accept only euros.
