San Jose has a large urban trail network of 53 miles (90km), cited as the nation's largest by Prevention Magazine, and linked to surrounding towns, rural open spaces and foothills. Within the city look for the Coyote Creek, Guadalupe River, Los Gatos Creek, Los Alamitos Creek, Penitencia Creek, and the Silver Creek Valley trails.

First opened in 1927 as a grand movie palaces with magnificent ornate Jazz Age décor, the building was shuttered for decades until a $75 million renovation between 1998 and 2004. The California reopened as a major landmark and 1,100-seat hall filled with modern amenities. Called one of the most beautiful theatres in the state, it is now the home to Opera San Jose and Symphony Silicon Valley, and plays host to the annual Cinequest Film Festival, among other concert and dance performances.
